Individual rooms are grouped together to form “houses” and arranged according to urban planning criteria - this allows a nursing home to resemble a village

light flooded development with differentiated color design

rooms as "houses" are visible in the facades

The concept behind this nursing home in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district is based on a „house-within-a-house“ system: by designing the room groups as individual, free-standing structures in a variety of bright, cheerful colours, the aim is to create an appealing atmosphere for residents and avoid a hospital-like feel.
Here, too, a „vertical cityscape“ is created, with the rooms interpreted as „houses“ (with views to the inside and outside) and the corridors as light-flooded “streets” and „squares“. The different colours make it easier for residents to recognise their rooms, and windows facing the corridor areas allow bedridden residents to participate in ward life.
