By employing the standard vocabulary of affordable housing – such as standardised window sizes, uniform PVC windows, galvanised railings, and prefabricated balconies in their raw state – it is possible to respond to the economic conditions of the market whilst still creating a building that offers a high quality of living. In the design, for example, the focus is on colour rather than materiality – this allows for a varied structural design to be achieved with a comparatively modest budget.
The focus is not on the building’s lavish materials, but on the quality of the flats: spacious, wraparound balconies, large floor-to-ceiling windows, sliding walls and a layout organised into functional zones rather than a fixed room layout – the primary focus is not on visual appearance, but on practicality. We want to create a living environment in which a very large number of residents, some with completely different lifestyles and living arrangements, feel at home in the long term.
