The building as a whole serves merely as a framework, a stage, so to speak, which is only brought to life through the activities of its residents – that is, through the actual ‘performance’ that takes place within it. The personal and individual adaptation of the spaces is expressly encouraged. Consequently, the character of the building and its external appearance are shaped primarily by the vitality brought to it by its residents.
The focus is not on the legibility or recognisability of a visual, architectural signature, but rather on the use of a building – it is only through this that a concept can reach its full potential. The unpredictable is not merely accepted; rather, it is made the point of reference. The result is an open concept that takes into account the vitality, dynamism and diversity of modern society, whilst at the same time reflecting them.
Rather than imposing any kind of restrictions on residents through design measures, our role as planners is to expand the scope of their use as much as possible. Our aim is to create the means, conditions and opportunities for each individual to shape their own environment independently and to redesign it as and when they wish, according to their needs, desires and whims. The aim is not to create a building that is meticulously designed down to the last detail but ultimately rigid, but rather to encourage and guide residents to make the most of their freedom when living in the building. This freedom of design is, of course, always expressed within a clear, functional framework.
